Experimental Investigation of Condensate Production of Air Conditioners: Quantity and Quality of Condensate as Drinking Water

When water vapor in the air comes in contact witha surfacewhich has a temperature below its dew temperature, the vapor water will condense from a gas toa liquid. The water vapor in the air that becomes liquid is referred to as condensate. The condensate that produced on air conditioners has a significant volume and a potential as a drinking water. In the air conditioners, the condensate was formed on the surface of evaporator. The amount of condensate water depends on the local humidity of air and the cooling capacity of air conditioners. Theoretically, the quality of condensate water is essentially the same as distilled water. The lack of minerals in the condensate water needs additional minerals into water in order to be used as drinking water. The present study uses two split type air conditioners with compressor of 2.5 HP (1.9 kW) nominal input power at 220 V which installed in the two different places, i.e. in the room close to the toilet and in the workshop for welding. The amount of condensate water is recorded every hour for 10 hours. The results show that the production of the condensate water average is 3.7 liter/hour. This indicates that based on quantity, the amount of condensate water enough to be used as drinking water for more than 12 people if the AC operated for 10 hours per day. However, based on the results of laboratory test, the content of condensate water depends on the location of the evaporator. In the room close to toilet, the condensate contains coliform bacteria while being close to workshop of welding contains lead (Pb). Water treatments should be carried out in order to be used as drinking water.
