This article focuses on the representation of Native American (Indian) identity in Walt Disney animated film, Pocahontas. The aim of this study is to analyse how 'Indian-ness' is represented in the film which may suggest cross-cultural relations from Western perspectives. As the film concerns race and gender relations, a postcolonial feminist approach is used to interpret the film. The analysis will demonstrate that although the film in some ways attempts to raise gender and race issues, the celebration of feminist achievements is inevitably used to 'disrupt' the values of 'Indian' cultures. The film can also be read as consolidating the position of the dominant group by positioning Pocahontas as "brown woman saving white man".
