This article focuses on how race, gender and class are represented in three novels by women. The study centres on the construction of the identity of 'whiteness' and 'blackness' in the novels. The aim of this article is not to describe prescriptively what 'white' and 'black' identity is but to analyse how 'white' and 'black' identity is constructed in the three novels. As this raises race, gender and class issues, a postcolonial feminist approach will be applied to read the novels. The novels are Katharine Susannah Prichard's Coonardoo (1929) which deals with the relation between White and Aboriginal Australians; Titie Said's Selamat Tinggal Jeanette (1986) which concerns cross-cultural situations between Western and Indonesian characters; and Elizabeth Kata's A Patch of Blue (1961) which concentrates on the relation between White and Black Americans. The study will demonstrate that the identities of 'whiteness' and 'blackness' are constructed through not only the relation between race and genders but class also plays the main role in the construction of both identities. When 'black' identity is not visible, class may cross the boundaries of 'whiteness' but when 'black' is visible class may not cross the boundaries of 'whiteness'.
