The Use of Authentic Materials for Improving Learner's Achievement in Comprehending Texts

English materials that are related to the students' major at engineering department are quite rare and the available materials do not expose the students to the real texts that they may find in their job. To overcome this problem, the use of authentic materials is an option. As an English teacher (the writer is often asigned to teach at Engineering Department), I am interested in finding out whether authentic materials motivate students to learn English. What I mean by authentic in this case is the materials related to their subject matter and are not for teaching English. The study is carried out in the first semester. Two classes of electronic engineering are observed throughout the semester. The cores of the pre and post-test are compared by independent t-test using SPSS 10. The study reveals that authentic materials can make the students interested ill English texts and help them in improving their understanding texts.
