The aim of this study is to investigate the strategies used on the speech act of apology by adult learners. The participants were the second year students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung. They were 25 students. Their age ranges from 18 to 21 years old. Data were collected from Discourse Completion Task (DCT) in order to investigate responses of apology given by the participants. The result of this study indicates that from the five strategies suggested by Olshtain and Cohen, almost none of the participants uses the strategies that is IFID in expressing their apology. Most of them use other strategies proposed such as Explanation or account Promise of forbearance, and Taking on responsibility more often in responding the situation. Only few students use other strategies like Intensification or Downgrading. Intensification is only used when they feel very guilty, while downgrading is used when the face is threatened.
