The Development of Algorithm for Controlling Hexapod Fire Fighting Robot Movements

This paper describes a development of algorithm to control the robot performance. Data of the robot system is taken from provided sensors. Types of the sensors are determined by the function of the robot system, the robot construction and dimension, and the environment at which the robot will be operated. In this research, the developed algorithm has been implemented in an intelligent hexapod fire fighting robot model. The robot is able to navigate or to explore a number of rooms, to detect the fire existence in a room, to trace the fire position and to extinguish the fire, then to navigate back to its starting position. The program is implemented with a BASIC language and operated on BASIC STAMP microcontroller produced by Parallax. The microcontroller is applied for a main processing unit. The robot has been examined in a test arena that contains a number of rooms made from wood material using a light candle as a source of flame. The test result shows that the algorithm has been satisfied the system requirements. The robot has operated successfully to finish its task in 4 minutes without collision.
