English Learning Behavior of Civil Engineering Students

This study was conducted to find the answer of the question "what are the English learning behaviors of the civil engineering students when they are in English rending classics?" It was a qualitative case study conducted in an English reading class of 24 Civil Engineering students at a Bandung State Polytechnic. The data were collected from five types of instruments i.e tests, open and closed questionnaires, journals, small talks and classroom observations. The students' learning behaviors were explored from the points of view of the four components of learning autonomy i.e learning purposes, knowledge, skills, and willingness. The results showed that although the tertiary students of non-English departments had learned English for at least six years in junior and senior high schools, they were mostly novice language learners. Therefore, it can be concluded that tertiary students need helps to develop their language learning strategies which also improve their English.
