Engineering design process does not necessary starting-from scratch, various design techniques that has been used in designing and manufacturing previous products, combined with other engineering knowledge e.g. industry standards, design process best practices, employee know how, and professional compliances can be captured and stored into a Knowledgeware and then re-used it for future design. This reduces design cycle time, saves cost and improve the quality of the product. The methodology to capture and re-use engineering knowledge, referred to as Knowledge Based Engineering, is available in several software as solely KBE systems or integrated into CAD systems. In this study, KBE is compared to traditional design process to identify the benefit of using it, as well as different KBE systems are also reviewed to identify the most user friendly system. Based on this study, productivity of design engineering process is increased significantly when using CATIA Knowlegdewabe system.
