In the translation process, the translator might find the difficulties in understanding the author perspective or point of view because of the difference between two languages, the structure of sentences, and culture. So, the application of modulation technique can be a solution to overcome the problems. The title of this project is An Analysis of Modulation Technique Used in a Translation of Bumi Manusia Novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer into This Earth of Mankind by Max Lane. This research is aimed to find out types of modulation used in translating Bumi Manusia into This Earth of Mankind novel, to find out the types of modulation most commonly used in This Earth of Mankind novel, and to compare the occurrence between obligatory and optional aspects in the application of modulation technique in the text. The qualitative method is employed in this research. There are 80 data found in the novels categorized into using modulation technique, and the type which is commonly found is active for passive with 38 data (47.5%). Then, the number of the occurrences for the application of optional modulation and obligatory modulation is 68 data (85%) and 12 data (15%). The translator is quite successful in translating the novel because the are 75 data (93.75%) that are categorized as an appropriate translation and they are only 5 data (6.25%) that are categorized as inappropriate translation. Moreover, the number of the occurance for the application of optional modulation is higher than the obligatory modulation, with 68 data (85%) and 12 data (15%) respectively.
